Take off to a field trip at Kansas Aviation Museum to enhance your student’s educational experience! Field trips at Kansas Aviation Museum are a great option to introduce your student to the wonders of Aviation and see why Wichita is the “Air Capital of the World.” Get their inertia started and spark your student’s creativity while following Kansas Education Standards in STEAM or History! The Fundamental Field Trip lasts approximately 2-2.5 hours. Each add on experience is approximately 25-30 minutes. Lunch space can be provided upon request.

Fundamentals Field Trip:

Museum Tour: Tour the 1940’s historic airport and control tower, learn the history of aviation in  Kansas  and why Wichita is the “Air Capital of the World,” see vintage aircraft, and appreciate local historical figures such as Black Aviators and Women in Aviation.

Ramp Tour: (Weather Dependent): Step inside the Boeing 727 “FedEx” aircraft, examine the Boeing B52 Stratofortress, and get up close to executive jets such as the Learjet 23.

Science of Flight Lesson: Master the science of flight as you examine early aerodynamics, Newton’s Laws of Motion, the Bernoulli Principle, aircraft design and more!

For grades K-5, participate in the Find our Aviators: Stuffed Animal Scavenger Hunt and visit the Learning Center/Activity Hangar with STEM based toys, games, and activities.

For grades 6-12, participate in the Air Capital Knowledge Hunt and fly in virtual skies with Flight Simulators.

The Fundamentals Field Trip is in accordance with Kansas State Education Standards.

Science: Forces and Interactions (K-12:PS2-1)

Social Studies: Change Over Time (K-12:Standard 4)

Add On Experiences - $1.00 per student

S.T.E.A.M.

Grades PreK-2 Science-Weather: Students will learn how weather impacts planes and make a Cloud Spotter craft.

Kansas Standard: S.EC.t.1 & K-ESS2-D

Grades 6-8 Weather: In partnership with AccuWeather, students will explore how air masses create aviation-critical weather like storms and turbulence, learn about wind patterns and ocean impacts, and discover the challenges of weather prediction for safe flight operations.

Kansas Standard: K6-8-MS-ESS2-5

Grades K-5 Engineering: Students will learn and engage with the engineering design process as they learn the parts of the plane and complete a design challenge to test their skills.

Kansas Standard: K-5-ETS1-1

Grades 6-12 Engineering: Students will explore plane design and the engineering process, then apply their skills by building a NASA-inspired capsule to protect an egg during a simulated landing.

Kansas Standard: 6-12-ETS1-1

Grades 6-12 Technology-3d Printing: Students will learn how 3D printers work, explore how the technology is used to create aircraft components, and design and print parts to build a collaborative model plane.

Kansas Standard: 6-12-ETS1-1

Grades 6-8 Math and Charting: Students will learn to read an Aeronautical Chart, use math skills like reading scales and coordinates, and compare historic and modern charts to explore how aviation in Wichita has changed over time.

Kansas Standard: Geometry 5.G.2

Grades K-5 Art: Students will learn how art connects to the world by looking at Aviation-based art, creating their own artwork, and then presenting their artwork in an exhibit in the museum as they learn how art is presented.
