In late 1934, the City of Wichita completed construction of its first, real aviation terminal. Several air fields had been utilized prior to this time, but now the city had a proper terminal with the latest amenities. This included a control tower that was integrated into the building itself, with the most recent technology of the time. During the 1941/42 addition to the building, an additional level was added to the control tower to put it into its current configuration.
Stories abound with regard to early operators, signaling approaching airplanes with powerful lights, utilizing codes to communicate messages in real time to pilots. All the while, these operators commanded a view of the Wichita terrain that was unparralled then and even now. The tower being the highest vantage point in the Wichita region, it afforded a view of the area that is both useful and breathtaking.
Today the tower provides an opportunity to learn more about the geography of the area and the history of local aviation, with perfect line of site to view activity at McConnell Air Force Base, Boeing IDS, Spirit Aero Systems and a panoramic view of Wichita's downtown skyline.
The Kansas Aviation Museum has painstakingly researched the history of the air terminal control tower and will provide an exhibit that details the equipment that was utilized there and the people who operated that equipment.
Cost is free to the public.

In the history of general aviation and certainly in the history of Wichita aviation, there is no more seminal figure than Clyde Cessna. An early pioneer of flight, Cessna started and ended companies on his quest to build planes during a period that was fraught with economic ups and downs that, at times, put his plan in great peril. He spent winters working on his planes in the family barn with hayloft that doubled as the family home.
Persistence paid great dividends and subsequent shepherding by his nephew, Dwayne Wallace, Russ Meyer and others have turned Cessna into the powerhouse that it is today. The Kansas Aviation Museum pays tribute to the legend that is Cessna aviation with a treatment of its history that will take you from the early days of Cessna's life through the modern era of large scale operations producing corporate business jets that have transformed the world as Cessna could have never imagined.
Cost is free to the public.
