During his 38 year tenure at Fort Hays State University, Witten was influential in creation of the University’s pilot training program and was an advisor for the aviation students for 26 years. He directed and instructed summer aerospace education workshops for elementary and secondary school teachers and contributed innovative aids for other teachers. He taught Boy Scouts striving for their Aviation Merit Badges, promoted aviation safety through accident prevention and other FAA safety programs, and was an FAA Designated Written Test Examiner. Witten served on the Kansas Commission on Aerospace Education for 30 years and 12 year on the Hays Airport Advisory Board. Furthermore, he voluntarily contributed his flying skills to numerous civic missions. An Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict, he instructed aircraft and engine mechanics at several Air Force bases.
