After serving as a member of the Bell Aircraft team that designed and built the first helicopter certified by the Civil Aviation Authority in 1964, Seibel moved to Wichita, Kansas, and formed the Seibel Helicopter Company. His first design flew for the first time in 1947. Cessna Aircraft bought Seibel Helicopter Company in 1952, in order to use his design as the base for the Cessna CH-1 “Skyhook”, which was certified in 1955. It became the first helicopter to land on Pike’s Peak, Colorado, and set a number of world altitude records, including 30,000 foot limit over Wichita, in 1958. The helicopter project was discontinued in 1963. About 50 Seibel–designed helicopters were built in Wichita from 1947 to 1962. Seibel retired from Bell Helicopter Company in 1981, where he is recognized for his prototype design work on the UH-1 Huey, the 206 Jet Ranger, and the 212 series of Bell helicopters.
