James Jabara

Kansas Aviation Hall of Fame

After graduating from Wichita’s North High School, at the age of seventeen, Jabara was accepted into the United States Air Force officer’s school for flyers, without a college degree, because of his Eagle Scout rank. Jabara served in World War II, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam as a highly decorated pilot. By 1951, he had destroyed four enemy MiGs and needed one more to become the first “jet-to-jet ace” in history. At war’s end, Jabara had killed fifteen MiGs, becoming the U.S.A.F.’s second triple jet ace in 1953.  While preparing for another tour of duty in Vietnam, he was killed in an auto accident. An Airport in northeast Wichita is named in his memory.
